Local poet finding success from Nhlazatshe

Ratanang Mohlape, aka Spha DaPoet Egcotjiwe from Nhlazatshe Elukwatini, is gaining popularity across the entertainment industry.

His made his poetry debut in 2012 and after that, there was no stopping him. He released uGogo and Khuluma and gained not only the attention of poetry lovers, but acquired many new fans. “My poetry continues to heal and motivate people with beautiful wordplay. In 2020, I auditioned and got to runner-up in Mpumalanga Got Talent which was a great experience for me.  Later in 2021, I was signed under Bazothini Entertainment which published my album Egcotjiwe which consists of ten motivational audio poems and is available on all digital platforms.

A few months ago I won the Best Poet Award in the National Lotteries Commission, opening many doors for me,” he said. He also partook in a
music creative workshop competition in 2022, sponsored by NYDA and other companies. He won first place in the poetry category. “Now I am working on my second album, Licilongo, consisting of 12 Siswati poems. This will be released early 2025.”

So far, Mohlape had won Mpumalanga’s Got Talent runner-up award and the Hendrina Talent Show, also as runner-up and Best Poet of the Year Award in 2021. He was invited for radio Interviews and air plays from Lokuhle and BCR FM, featured On K Mensual Online Magazine and recited his work in the Silulu Sesiswati National Lexicography Unit. He participated in the Artists Performing in Mpumalanga’s Legends of Art event, represented Ehlanzeni TVET College In Poetry and was nominated in the 2023 SATMA Awards for Best Indigenous Poet Category.

Currently making waves across the province, he also called on event organisers to showcase his talents by booking him to perform.
