Mpumalanga’s branch of the South African Social Security Agency, (SASSA) celebrated Mandela Day by distributing school uniforms to disadvantaged learners Mkhondo on July 18.
SASSA celebrated the international day under the theme “It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity.” This is to be celebrated throughout the entire month encouraging South Africans to play a role in the lives of those less fortunate.
SASSA decided to make a meaningful contribution to the development of struggling children in education, restore dignity and bring equality among learners. This programme also inspires learners to attend school without feeling isolated and despite being disadvantaged, walk in confidence.
This initiative targeted 240 learners from Madola, Ntithane and Nkukhunda Primary schools, located in rural and farming areas to beneficiaries from poverty stricken families whose only income is a social grant.
During implementation of the programme, the Agency collaborated with specially identified schools. The social relief school uniform project also ensured the process is transparent and fair. SASSA has spent R5500 on girl learners and R5200 for boys, totalling R1, 268 306.25.
SASSA also encouraged parents to play their role by ensuring learners attend school every day and keep their school uniforms clean to last long.
